The white season

Muslims all over the world have 2 major holidays: Ramadan Bayram and Kurban Bayram they are exactly 2 months and 10 days apart and it is believed that organizing weddings in the middle of those two is bad luck.

Since we have a lot of superstitious people in Sarajevo who are mostly Muslim, the agency (event management agency) I work for has not been doing a lot of weddings at the end of the last year.

The Kurban Bayram passed at the end of December and everything changed.

Last weekend we had two enormous weddings and more are on the way. I was the coordinator and wedding planner for one of those.

The custom here is to get married on Wednesdays (if you don’t want a big party) or Saturdays (if you want to have a huge celebration and for the whole city to know you are getting hitched).

Anyways, most of the weddings we organize are on Saturdays. I was in charge of everything from flowers, decoration, wedding cake, to music and making sure everything goes according to the agenda.

A day after this wedding, I get great news that my best friend from Turkey (she is Bosnian but lives in Turkey) is getting married to a Turkish guy who was here last summer but since I was in Singapore we missed each other and I didn’t get to meet him. Now, I am supposed to be the maid of honor at her wedding.

Then I have my first trainee (an Indian girl in London) getting married to her long-term love in April (I am supposed to visit them as well). Another uni friend is getting married in a matter of months in Sarajevo and not to mention 2 of my close friends got married last year…

What is up with the wedding seasons?? Is it just me or all of my friends all getting hitched at the age of 22-24. Ouch!

The season looks white, and it’s not cause of the snow.

Weddings are fun, but I agree with you, why get hitched so early??? People live longer these days, so you don't have to extend the duration of misery, hahaha....just kidding :-) Always a personal choice as to when a couple wants to tie the knot.

And you know traditionally... the bride can only wear white to signify her purity and virginity.

NOw I am sure a lot of brides are pure in heart... but that other one? I am not so sure. Hahahaha

Are you anywhere near your wedding day Meri?

@ Lady: (shaking my head) not even thinking about it ;) I am only 23!!! Right now organising other people's weddings seems like a test run for something in the future but i have to admit it freaked me out a bit.

PS most of the wedding dresses are not white but the ivory colour (champagne as they like to call it).. i wonder why :)

Did you know that on the 29th of February it is a tradition for women to propose to men? It does happen, in the UK they even have radio shows and TV stations over which women propose to their loved ones on that day..

It just looks that way, Merili. I missed that whole procession with my high school friends by moving away, learning photography and making new friends. They are happy, but no more so than you. Thank you so much for keeping in touch.
