Oath to Sarajevo, oath to Bosnia and Herzegovina
The first time I came to A week after we arrived, the war started. We left that day.
Our holiday was turning into a nightmare.
The next time I came to
We came 3 years in a row. Every summer; stayed for a week or two. It was nice, for holidays.
Since the 4-year war ended only in 1995 you can only imagine the state of the country in 1996.
The buildings were destroyed, there was still no water, electricity or sewage control in a lot of the buildings. The shells has caused so much damage to the pipe lines inside the houses that rats, cockroaches and other different creatures were very familiar for those who has not put new isolation material in their apartments.
I moved to
The transition was tough. Moving to a city which (at the time) had no shopping malls, still used Deutch Mark at national currency and was filled with cemeteries was torture.
It has been more than 7 years since then.
I was walking through the old Turkish quarter today. Everything is repaired. The wood has been changed, the red rooftops have been carefully replaced, the stones have been washed and polished, religious objects have all been reconstructed…
That part of the city is an official candidate to become an UNESCO protected site.
I walk past the Austro-Hungarian quarter, where all the buildings look like something from the 19th century movie. Pink and yellow, blue and red, very fancy architectural designs, statues, high ceilings and beautiful doorways. Now that I look at it, it seems hard to believe what I had seen in 1996, as a result of 3.000 shells falling onto the city daily (in average).
Only here and there, you can see the red blots on the pavement. Holes in a shape of a rose, filled with red rubber, emphasizing spots where people were killed by shells thrown from enemy positions.
Here and there you see the never ending cemeteries of people who had been buried quickly, during the nights so the enemies wouldn’t shoot during burial rituals.
I look around and it hits me. Almost everything has been reconstructed. The buildings, the schools, the hospitals, bridges, roads, railways…
Almost 5,3 billion USD have been invested into B&H since 1995.
I can see where the money has gone. I have been watching international help being invested into infrastructure for the last 7 years.
Today I have officially picked my final university thesis and the topic is:
“Reconstruction of Infrastructure in
from 1996 to 2006 from The World Bank aspect”.
It will be fun to do research about tangible things and I feel as if I owe it to Bosnia to make a summary of what has been ‘healed’ in this beautiful country which cries no more.

a reality very few look into! your final thesis will be a great piece of work! do share it across!!
great post merili!
Thanks for sharing this. It sounds like your country has made great strides. And your thesis research should be rewarding especially so because you have been living in that history. Best wishes.
Couldnt choose a better topic, its so nice your final thesis will be something directly from your heart:)
Isnt it amazing, I think it displays the power of human nature, we can destroy so easily and so many lives are lost...but then, we have the power to rebuild everything and start all over again...I just hope that we learn from our history as we go towards the future... :)
please keep posting. Many Americans have no idea this is going on. It carries all the more power as it comes from your heart. Very moving...
interesting!
Will you escape from your "homeland" if a war breaks out again? You're just a poor creature, you lived in a luxury in London while Bosnians were butchered in your "homeland". It's not being a "nomad" but being a "coward".
You were enjoying in parties with your "sexy" boyfriends while we were collecting money for Bosnia when you were in Turkey, high school of Milli Piyango...You were just an ignorant one, and i see you never changed...Working for capitalist pigs which caused Bosnia to fall into pieces, world bank? Thinking that "world bank" and "imf" helps states to reconstruct? Sure?
You must pray God that Chechens, Turks and some other muslim fighters came to your help after 1993-94, if they didn't come, you would still give your weapons to Serbs and wait to be killed. How brave your people are! And how brave -you- are, living a "nomad" life with luxury...Damn you, go away from muslim lands, work for capitalist pigs...While Bosnia is still awaiting her sad destiny, to be divided again after Dayton, a dead born treaty...
as much as this post was personally "moving", it was also enlightening, all the best with your thesis!
@ nomad:
I am sorry you feel this way but you obviously don't know anything about me.
You would know I didn't have 'sexy' boyfriends in England and UK since I was a kid back then. :P
Such a shame you didn't put your name down.. but still I have an idea of who this might be... ts ts ts
@nomad:
because of people like you both bosnia and serbia are in such situation today... and because of people like you balkan is what it is - bure baruta...
luckily, there is still sane people who are willing to fight for good life, and in a right way...
(you can always buy a gun for Meri and teach her how to shoot so that she can shoot me when I come to Sarajevo - Meri just promise me you`ll leave me enough time to eat cevapi at Zeljo`s for the last time :D)
@ peckopivo: Hahaha, I would join you for chevapi at Zeljo's :) As for the gun, this guy is not going to teach me anything.
I don't hang around people with poisonous thoughts and you are right, it's what makes this part of the world rotten, people with sick minds...
Thank you Merili for sharing this coz it certainly raised my awareness to this part of the world.
I truly appreciate this post....Thank you.
you write so well and with such sincere thoughtfulness to every paragraph, sentence, words. You life seems much more colorful than mines and I think its great that you have turned all the experiences - good and bad - into something positive and meaningful. A thesis of such a subject matter is not just a paper but a documented historical record of the transformation of a civilization.
Best Thoughts to you on your journey!
