World Cup Vs World Poverty
I know we all love the World Cup – it is world class entertainment and we all know the good old: “Live football, breath football, drink Coca Cola” ads which are on during every WC. I have shown a great amount of interest in the previous WC held in
I will leave the judgment up to you…
WC 2006: approx. 72.000 people watched the Japan-Brazil game
Real world: During the above mentioned, 90 minute game almost the same number of children died in
WC 2006: NIKE paid 16 million USD to the Brazilian country team to wear their football dresses during the Mundial
Real World: NIKE factories in
WC 2006: About 60.000 people paid approx. 200 EUR for tickets to see
Real World: For 12 million EUR,
WC 2006: ADIDAS is the official deliverer of half a million balls for this World Cup
Real World: ADIDAS fired 250 workers in
WC 2006: FIFA donated 15 million USD worth of equipment to the American country team for the Cup.
Real World: FIFA closed a factory in Cipukat (
WC 2006: FIFA has paid a total of half a million USD for the country teams of certain politicians and ‘authorities’ for the WC 2006.
Real World: For the same money ‘invested’ over the years into politics and football the world hunger problem would be solved and cure for various disease could have been found.
WC 2006: PUMA, ADIDAS, NIKE, LOTTO, FILA, REEBOK are companies which sponsored national teams which participated this year.
Real World: Approx. 79% of the workers who work in the factories of the companies above and are stationed in
Think about it.

whoa! yea, anyways i don't watch futball or wear sports shoes/clothes/accessories, and i don't do tommy hilfiger either cuz he's a racist..but these facts are certainly some food for thought.
Every day I feel the backlash of the world in statistics. I breathe the pollution caused by industry, and I cry for the underprivileged. I can only help but a few orphaned, distressed children...I pray they will mature into responsible adults.
Thaks for reminding me of corporate inhumanity. I do my best overcoming it.
Definitely things to ponder. Some things we can change; other things depend on a multitude of factors. But you do make a point about where our priorities are.
sorry, the pancake photo took my attention and i could not read about world cup any more, so I am commenting now on the previous post: very nice post and well said, I can understand all about crappy service, I live in Greece, only here every body complains and still nothing changes, i think we are all part of the problem...
Nice thoughts for my new post, relevant to some thoughts of mine lately!
well, meri...it is in the hands of the those poor countries to change their life. If their leaders doesnt care about their people, why should foreigners do?
some very interesting figures and facts!!
there will always be a diff between the developing nations and rich ones!
Capitalist world will always capitalize on whatever they can lay their hands on.Getting used by them or falling for flashy ads depends on the individual..Its a codependent world.
its quite amazing where people put there money - A person once asked me on a business trip what I would buy for co-workers back home and my only thought was that money should be better given to people who need it more - I prefer donating my money to needy causes than to people who don't need them - dont get me wrong, I love giving gifts to friends and relatives because of what they mean to me and the life I live but I also draw a line when it comes to co-workers because I dont believe in giving gifts for that simply to play the "politics" of the work environment - at the same time, these multimillion dollar companies could do so much more than I if they simply had an ounce of care in their corporate hearts - Billionaire Warren Buffet recently gave a ton load of money to the Bill Gates (Microsoft) foundation - in a way, its nice that its going to the Bill Gates foundation but on the other hand, all that money seems to be sitting in a bank generating more interests than doing any real practical good to stopping starvation in third world countries or providing basic health care to those countries that need it - I guess I said enough - see what happens when you start posting statistics like that?! It kinda works me up =P
Wow, that's alot to take in...thank you.
...wow...very good post Merili... indeed, reading all these makes your mind wander...and if you have been into some of these places and seen these things with your own eyes, then the feeling is even more strong...
priorities to keep in mind, thanks
